Message of Grace

When a person is in jeopardy it means he is in trouble unless he happens to be on the popular game show by that name. Often it is true that men are in grave danger without their knowledge. Once I remember driving home as I always do, in a hurry with my mind occupied with many thoughts. When I got out of my truck I noticed that my front wheel was held on by only one lug and it was dangerously close to coming off. Had I realized the peril that I was in I would have stopped immediately, but in my ignorance I went blindly on, only delivered by the mercy of Almighty GOD who controls all things. Left to myself and my own knowlege I would have surely had a calamity.

Sometimes we are in danger because we fail to heed certain warning signs. How often have we heard some testify of ignoring health problems only to ultimately discover that they are in a battle for their life. This can be seen illustrated quite clearly with the health problems faced by those who have been continually warned of the dangers of smoking yet continue this destructive habit. When cancer or heart disease threatens to end their life must they not confess that they were warned of these consequences but chose to ignore them. The same can be said about the dietary habits of most of us.

Then, amazingly enough, we often put ourselves in danger, knowing exactly what the consequences may be in order to experience some thrill whose pleasure is short lived at best. It may be driving our car to the job at seventy miles an hour meeting cars going in the opposite direction separated from us by a few feet. Or it could be jumping from a perfectly good airplane to fall through the sky, opening a parachute at the last moment or piloting a race car at breakneck speed for the thrill of putting a trophy on our mantel.

All of us have experienced these three types of danger in our lives. This is a very good illustration of the dangers of sin. Now some choose to say there is no such thing as sin. Yet ignorance is not bliss in this case for the scripture says. 'All have sinned and come short of the glory of GOD' and 'the soul that sinneth, shall die.' It matters not whether you believe it to be the case or even if you never heard of such a thing. Be sure of this, your sin will bring you into judgment before a holy GOD, 'for it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.' (Heb.9:27)

Most people who read this message have repeatedly been warned of the dangers of sin and impending judgment. Some of you have even felt pangs of conscience about it. Yet you have chosen to ignore those warnings, some which you have had to struggle against in your own mind. You go on your way hoping you will survive, intending on changing your ways someday. Someone has rightly said 'the road to hell is paved with good intentions'. Dear friend, 'To day if ye will hear HIS voice, harden not your hearts.' (Heb 4:7)

The pleasures of sin, (though often so short-lived) nonetheless hold men in its icy, steel grip. As a heroin addict keeps searching for that next infusion of the magic elixir which can satiate his desire so, also, men by nature pursue the pathway of sin all the while knowing that the very thing which brings them pleasure for a moment also is destroying their very soul. 'Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright. At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.' (Prov 23:31-32)

The SPIRIT of GOD is sent into the world to convince (convict) men of sin. This is not a pleasant experience but one that is most often accompanied by tears of repentance. 'CHRIST JESUS came into the world to save sinners.' (1 Tim 1:15)

The SPIRIT of GOD is sent into the world to convince men of righteousness. When a man has been convinced of his own sinfulness he must confess that he has no righteousness of his own. So the righteousness which the SPIRIT convinces him of is the righteousness of JESUS CHRIST, 'who of GOD is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:' (1 Cor 1:30)

The SPIRIT of GOD is sent into the world to convince men of judgment. Impending doom is laid upon the heart of one convicted of his own sin and unworthiness. But when that same SPIRIT convinces him that CHRIST is his righteousness, the clouds of impending doom are swept away in the glory of redemption. 'There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus.' (Romans 8:1)

Come HOLY SPIRIT come,

Let Thy bright beams arise;

Dispel the darkness from our minds

And open all our eyes.

Convince us of our sin,

Then lead to JESUS' blood;

And to our wondering view reveal

The secret love of GOD.

Joseph Hart (1712-1768)

Why Will You Die?

I set watchmen over you, saying, Hearken to the sound of the trumpet.

But they said, We will not hearken.

Jereremiah 6:17

The gospel of the LORD JESUS CHRIST has been proclaimed almost nonstop in the United States for the last three hundred years. Long before there was a Declaration of Independence there was a clear declaration throughout this land that JESUS CHRIST is SAVIOR and LORD. There have been some, in every generation, who have hearkened to that message. By the grace of Almighty GOD, they have embraced HIM and his way gladly, without compromise. Yet there is a multitude, even a majority, who will not listen. Some scoff at this clear message as if it is the raving of fools. Others choose to ignore the truth that makes them uncomfortable to pursue other things they count to be of more value. Still others salve their conscience by becoming religious. There are probably more churches per capita in the United States than anywhere on earth. Never before in history have there been built more meeting houses, most of gargantuan proportions, than in the last 25 years. But it is increasingly difficult (almost impossible) to find churches which are patterned after the new testament in doctrine and practice. The methods of Hollywood have invaded most assemblies making them primarily entertainment centers. In the last one hundred years the work of the HOLY SPIRIT has been reduced from the serious and solemn work of bringing sinners to conviction and repentance to that of inducing men and women into giddy experiences and trances according to most preaching we hear. Gone is weeping for sin, in its place is dancing, vain jangling, and being 'slain.' Popcorn is the only thing missing from this circus. Clowns in white suits parade in front of audiences claiming 'Holy Ghost' power to heal. Yet they spout lies and half truths concerning the gospel and turn away multitudes who have genuine diseases preferring to focus on back trouble and short legs. They have no shame as they claim to preach a gospel which is for the poor and needy yet they live in the lap of luxury reaped from the backs of those whom they deceive. Will not the LORD spew them out of HIS mouth? 'Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding.' (Proverbs 9:6)

And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
